07 fall - heather, anne
reflection and refraction

During the fall of 2007 we met with Amy Germundson of the University of
Virginia to learn about differentiated instruction. Through her workshop we
spent a lot of time learning about curriculum design with a particular focus
on Understanding by Design by Jay McTighe. With this in mind we re-
examined our lesson study objectives and then reorganized them into
understandings, skills and cognitive processes, and knowledge. While this
helped us to better align our lesson, it was still more lesson planning than
lesson study. We also continued to focus on the unit as a whole and again
lost sight of the boundaries of the lesson we were trying to study. We had
not taught the lesson yet at this point and so we were limited in our ability
to reflect on student learning or to make meaningful changes.
